Family Therapy

Family Therapy

Typically family therapy consists of two or more members engaging in therapy together. At Akua Family Therapy, we hold the belief that each family member’s voice is valuable. We strive to help families create “safe space” for all family members to feel valued. We sometimes challenge families to think differently about how they have structured their communication, interaction and relationships. We value a strong hierarchy and an honoring of parents, however we find that sometimes hierarchy is misunderstood or misaligned. Sometimes one person holds too much power in the family, and sometimes kids’ or spouses’ emotions are neglected. At Akua Family Therapy, our job as therapists is to pay attention to these dynamics and to help point them out at the right timing so that you can better understand your family members and strengthen your ability to work well together.

Some of our specialty areas: Blended Families, Step-Families, Conflicted Families, Co-parenting, Parent-Child Interaction, Strengthening relationships within subsystems (Structural Family Therapy), Emotion Focused Family Therapy.

Family therapy is not just for families. Individuals can engage in family therapy as well. Family therapy just means that we are working from the lens of systemic thinking. We are aware of how relationships play a role in our individual mental health. As we meet, we will be assessing and asking questions to better understand each client’s individual needs, goals, barriers and desires for mental health.  We want to help you to better understand and strengthen yourself and your ability to relate well with others.
